It's Maypole and they are EVERYWHERE right now. We started seeing these tall poles with what looks like a Christmas tree on top going up all over the place last Monday.
It is a HUGE tradition here in Germany. Watching a bunch of drunk Germans trying to put one up is even more entertaining then playing the new road game "Find the Maypole"
I don't know a lot about the history of the Maypole. All I know is that last Monday and Tuesday (Mayday) was a cause for a lot of celebration here in Germany. I do know that the eve of April30th is mischief night. We woke up on Mayday to a street lines with toilet paper and shaving cream. It is a tradition for the teenagers to take part in this tradition.
Also it is tradition for teenagers to go out and try to steal another town's Maypole. There is a whole list of rules regarding this game.
Regardless they are really neat to look at and it is so neat to see how one town varies from the next.
