Trier

Day one of our vacation brought us to Trier. All I can say is WOW!!!!

Trier is the oldest city north of the Alps. It has deep roots through out Roman History. Founded in 16 BC by Augustus it became known as the second Rome. Today a lot of the structures the Roman's built are still standing.

We fell in LOVE with Trier. We took our time exploring and didn't get a chance to see everything so we have canceled our Trip to Cologne this time and are going back for a second day in Trier. Here are a few pics from our trip today.

Porta Nigra

This structure is the only remaining gate left built by the Romans in Trier. In 1037 it was transformed into a church and it is believed that this transformation is what saved it during the Thirty Year War.

Trier Dom

Words can not explain the beauty of this church. The pictures don't even do it justice. There is nothing I really can say except for DOUBLE WOW!!! This structure was erected in 326 under Constantine the Great. Housed in this great church is the Tunic of Christ.

This is part of the ceiling of the Dom...

In this room is where the Tunic of Christ is kept.....

Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche)

This church stands immediately next to the Trier Dom actually they are connected by a small walkway. It is considered one of Germany's first Gothic churches. It was built from 1235-1260.

Kaiserthermen (Imperial Bath House)

Built in the early 4th century by Constantine I. These Baths are considered the largest of the Roman Empire even though there were never finished. The only part that remains today is the hot baths.

We spent a great deal of time here. THere were so many tunnels underneath and so much to explore that we really took our time walking through this great structure.

A few more pics from the day...
